Social power, often defined as the capacity to influence others, is a foundational concept in social interaction. Philosopher Bertrand Russell famously noted, "The fundamental concept in social science is Power, in the same sense in which Energy is the fundamental concept in physics." However, despite the increasing presence of artificial agents, including AI agents and robots, in our daily lives and workplaces, research on power dynamics in Human-Agent interactions remains relatively scarce. In this talk, I will begin by presenting two empirical studies investigating power dynamics in Human-AI and Human-Robot Interaction. I will then broaden the discussion, reviewing how power has been conceptualized in social science and examining how it is actually omnipresent—both explicitly and implicitly—in research on intelligent agents. Finally, I will outline the implications of my research for future researchers and designers.
